Acupuncture,
a part of traditional Chinese medicine, started long ago and has been
applied widely. Veterinary acupuncture was established when acupuncture
was applied to domestic and pet animals, and has been improved after a
long period of clinical practice and theoretical research. Profound and
effective in treatment, veterinary acupuncture is admired both at home
and abroad.
At Nanjing Agricultural University, there is a research division of traditional
Chinese veterinary medicine. With well-known experts, like Prof. Song
Dalu, Prof. Hu Yuanliang and Prof. Zhou Haoliang and Dr. Liu Jiaguo, the
division has been actively involved in the teaching, research and practice
of veterinary medicine, and therefore accumulated rich experience.
Since 1986, Nanjing Agricultural University has regularly (July to August)
hosted international courses on veterinary acupuncture in response to
the request from abroad. Fourteen courses have been conducted, and hundreds
of participants have been trained. The participants were graduate and
undergraduate students, clinical vets and visiting scholars from the UK,
the US, Japan, Germany, Switzerland and some other foreign countries.
The course focuses on diseases of dogs, cats, horses and cattle, and combines
theoretical study with clinical practice and study tours. The course provides
participants with opportunities to further understand traditional Chinese
medicine. After the course, a tour to Southeast China is organized.
